Maritime museum offers events
ByRoanoke Island Maritime Museum, at the Manteo waterfront, is dedicated to preserving the history of boat building on Roanoke Island. It also educates interested people about the craft of boat building. Tours of the museum are free and open to the public.
The museum will offer several events, at a cost, throughout the summer that will provide boat building education and hands-on experiences with all aspects of boats. Events include the summer youth Learn to Sail programs, the eighth annual One Design Regatta Saturday, July 31 and the monthly “Build a boat in a Day” and “Simple Rigging” programs.
The Learn to Sail program is currently running and will continue until Friday, Aug. 6. The sessions, open to youth eight and older, provide basic and intermediate lessons with Optimist and 421 sailboats. The program runs Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lessons are available in the morning and afternoon. The museum will hold ”Build a boat in a Day” July 15, Aug. 19 and Sept. 23, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Teams will build an 8-foot plywood boat using the stitch and glue method. The cost is $275 for Friends of Elizabeth II members and $300 for nonmembers. The cost includes all materials and the finished boat. The minimum age is eight years old with an adult and the workshop limit is five teams.
Simple Rigging will take place July 22, Aug. 12 and Sept. 16, 10 a.m. to noon. Students can bring dock lines to splice in this class. The cost is $25 for Friends of Elizabeth II members and $50 for nonmembers. Workshop limit is 10.
