Shepherd of Ocean at RIFP

  Miss Barbara Hird stars as Queen Elizabeth I and Chris Chappell as Sir Walter Ralegh in the Elizabethan era comedy, ”Shepherd of the Ocean,” to be shown in the indoor theatre at Roanoke Island Festival Park August 10, 11 and 12, at 2 p.m. The production centers on the relationship between the two famous people. The admission price is included in the general admission ticket to the park.

  ”Shepherd of the Ocean” starts with an introductory speech about Sir Wlalter Ralegh’s wrongdoings against King James I. Ralegh’s fate is beheading. As he lay on the block moments before death, the audience will watch as a misty dreamlike sequence begins onstage, getting a glimpse into Ralegh’s own final thoughts. An encounter between him and Queen Elizabeth I continues toe comedy.

  The dynamics between the two historical figures give a glimpse into their real lives from so many centuries ago. Through witty bantering and comical interaction, the audience will understand the real history, learn about legendary myths and speculate about the real story behind the personal relationship. ”Shephered of the Ocean” is designed to entertain, educate and captivate the audience.

  Originally from Yorkshire, England, Miss Barbara Hird studied and performed at the Bradfordd Playhouse and Film Theater. She was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor in North Carolina, for her work in ”Elizabeth R.” With a versatile background that includes theater, film and television, Miss Hird remains the most widely acclaimed for her portrayals of English monarchs. She has also co-edited a book, ”Roanoke Revisited,” with author and director lebame houston.

  Chris Chappell graduated from East Carolina University with a major in theater. For many years, he performed roles in ”The Lost Colony,” including Ananias Dare, Sir Walter Ralegh and John Borden. Currently Chappell professionally acts in the Raleigh-Durham area, co-owns a dance studio and is an instructor in dramatic art.

  Elizabeth R and Company produces ”Shepherd of the Ocean.” It is the only resident professional producing theatrical company in Dare County. The nonprofit company does quality stage, video and audio productions. It also advances historical scholarly research, symposia, seminars and theatrical interpretations.
