Hillis has painted all her life, winning awards and honors at competitive shows regionally and nationally, earning Signature Membership status in the Southern Watercolor Society, Virginia Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Baltimore Watercolor Society and the Potomac Valley Watercolor Society. She had a painting selected for the National Watercolor Society show in 2007. During the summer of 2010, the Department of the Interior awarded her a position as Artist in Residence in Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas. One of her paintings was published in “Splash 12,” a collection of 100 American watercolor paintings, in May of 2011, and she recently won the May 2010 “Creativity Challenge’ in the online version of “Watercolor Artist” magazine. For more information about Hillis and her work, visit her website at www.catherinehillis.com.

Highlights for this three-day workshop include forming a strong foundation in good design and a firm knowledge of the basic building blocks inherent in every class, but learning how to paint a work with glowing. Instruction on the development of proper values, edges, depth, technique, color intensity and color relationships will be incorporated into daily demonstrations.

Students will paint a fresh floral still-life indoors on the first day, working with light and reflections. The second day will incorporate a few hours on-site, then back to the classroom, and the third day will be indoors. Daily demonstrations, positive critiques and personal coaching will be a part of every lesson.
