Surfriders plan for race

  Surfrider Outer Banks Chapter will meet Saturday, July 17, 6:30 p.m. at Ocean Bay Boulevard/Kill Devil Hills bath house to get ready for the paddle race that will be held Saturday,  July 24 at the same location.

  Surfrider is a grassroots organization dedicated to tackling ocean environmental issues. (From www.obxcommongood.org)

Kalman to sing at concert series

  Kim Kalman will sing Thursday, July 15, at Currituck Heritage Park, Corolla, as part of the park’s summer concert series which takes place every Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

  Relax on the south lawn at the park and enjoy local musicians performing on the historic Whalehead Club’s front porch. Bring your beach chair or blanket and watch the sun set over the Currituck Sound while supporting the musical arts. No alcohol is permitted in the park. Wine and snack concessions are available, Leashed pets are welcome.

‘I Love a Piano’ comes to RIFP

  “”I Love a Piano” will be presented at Roanoke Island Festival Park by students in the Western Carolina University Musical Theatre Program July 13, 14 and 15, 8 p.m., at the pavilion. In the event of rain, the performance will be moved to the indoor theatre. It is free and open to the public. Celebrating the classic works of Irving Berlin, ”I Love a Piano” is a tribute to America in song, following one piano’s journey throughout America and its people from the turn of the nineteenth century to today. The cast will perform many of Berlin’s songs, including ”I Love a Piano,” ”Blue Skies,” ”How Deep is the Ocean,” and ”god Bless America.”

  Western Carolina University, located in Cullowhee, offers 220 undergraduate majors and concentrations and more than 40 graduate programs to about 9,500 students. The musical theatre program is part of WCU’s College of Fine and Performing Arts, which includes a school of stage and screen school of music and school of art and design.

Charity classic seeks sponsors

  The eighth annual Outer Banks Charity Classic Tennis Tournament, the signature fundraiser for the hospice program of Dare Home Health and Hospice, an agency of the Dare County Department of Public Health, will be held from Friday to Sunday, Oct. 1-3

  “The primary purpose of this event is to raise funds and awareness of this compassionate end-of-life care program, while promoting tennis,” said Jim Groff, chairman of the event. ”With the community’s support, we hope to raise $25,000.”

  Cosponsored by Duck Woods Country Club, Kilmarlic Health & Racquet Club, Pine Island Racquet & Fitness Club and Corolla Light Resort, the three-day event will be held at Duck Woods and Kilmarlic.

Funds are raised  primarily through auction proceeds and sponsorships as follows:

Court Sponsorship $1,000 or more – The names of all Court Sponsors will be prominently displayed on a tournament court throughout the three-day event and will be highlighted in the tournament program. Plus, all Court Sponsors will receive one entry fee for a men’s or women’s doubles team to play in the tournament and four complimentary admissions to the dinner and auction Oct. 2.

  Gold Sponsorships, $250 or more – The names of all Gold Sponsors will be displayed at one of the venues during the tournament and listed on a dedicated page in the tournament program. In addition, Gold Sponsors will receive two complimentary admissions to the dinner and auction.

  Benefactor Sponsorship, under $250 – The names of all Benefactor Sponsors will be listed in the tournament program.

  All tax deductible donations will be given directly and in entirety to Dare County Hospice. To become a tournament sponsor, contact Ralph Webster, sponsorship committee chair, at 252-453-8079 or Jim Groff, tournament chair, at 252, 255-0576.

  The hospice program is a vital part of the Dare County community, providing comfort, support and care when there is no cure. Funds raised from the charity classic are used specifically for hospice’s volunteer coordination activities. through hospice, doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, counselors and volunteers work together to enable patients to live out their final days with dignity in comfortable surroundings. Hospice also provides grief support for the patient’s family and loved ones during the difficult times of life’s final chapters and for a year after the patient passes away.

Sign up for two trips

  Two trips are upcoming at The Dare County Center.

  A shopping trip to Greenbrier Mall, Sam’s Club and Super Wal-Mart in Chesapeake is planned for Wednesday, Aug. 18. The group will depart the center at 9 a.m. There is no fee, and the group will shop until 4:30 p.m. You will need to eat lunch at the mall on your own during your shopping time.

  Space is limited, so register early by calling the center at 475-9270.

  A trip to the Virginia Air and Space Center is set for Wednesday, July 21, departing the center at 9 a.m. The cost is $12 and includes the entry fee fee for all exhibits with one regular IMAX film viewing. Bring extra money for lunch. The group will eat prior to arrival at the museum.

  Participants must sign up by calling 475-9270 and pay ahead of time, upon reserving their ticket.

Classes take hiatus

  There will be no Kung Fu or Tai Chi at The Dare Center in July and August. These groups will resume in September. There will also be no more Thursday evening Pilates this summer.

Coin club to meet

  OBX Coin Club will meet Wednesday, July 14, 7:30 p.m., at The Dare Center.

  Bring coins to show. The club is open to all ages from six to 106 who is interested in old or new coins and paper money, U.S. or world.

Celebrate Hawaii statehood

  Hawaii became a state Aug. 21, 1959 by proclamation of Dwight D. Eisenhower, U.S. President at the time.

  In celebration of Hawaii becoming a state, a luau will be held at the Baum Center Aug. 27, 1-3 p.m., so don your grass skirt and floral shirts and bring something Hawaiian to eat and the center will provide Hawaiian punch, music and fun.

  Sign up by calling 475-5637, and bring a dish. Recipes available upon request. Hint; think pineapple, coconut, pork, chicken and sweet.
