Women invite women to tea

Posted by: Linda Putnam | Comments Comments Off

For many years, men were the primary holder of wealth in our country. The federal tax code as well as religious ethics supported many early generous philanthropic gifts. Women have had a long history of community service and giving of time and talents that supported activities to benefit the needy and children in our communities.

Today, women now are in greater control of financial wealth than ever before in our history. Women’s funds created by groups of women are a more recent and growing area of philanthropy across the country. The Currituck-Dare Women’s Fund was organized by the Currituck-Dare Community Foundation Affiliate of NCCF in 2009.

The Fund is holding an afternoon tea on October 27, 4-5:30 p.m., to help with women of the community learn more the fund in Currituck and Dare County. It will be held at the home of Peggy Birkemeier. Please RSVP at 491-8166 or email to pbirk@nccommunityfoundation.org. (Courtesy www.obxCommonGood.org).

Free full-moon tour planned

Posted by: Linda Putnam | Comments Comments Off

As a special post-Irene experience for the Hatteras Island communities, the National Park Service will be offering free Full Moon Tours of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse the evening of Monday, September 12 from 7- 9:30 p.m. Tour groups of thirty people each will climb the lighthouse every 10 minutes.

As there are no lights inside the lighthouse, climbers will navigate the 257-stair staircase using their own handheld flashlights. From the watch room, climbers will be able to view the light up close and in motion and hear of the operation of the beacon, past and present – a truly unique experience. Outside on the lighthouse balcony (weather permitting) climbers will get a glimpse of what the lighthouse keepers of old were able to experience – seeing that beam of light reaching out to sea and the startling reflection of the newly risen moon on the ocean.
