Art, wine and food
Posted by: | CommentsThe Baum Center invites everyone to attend the Dare County Arts Council’s art and wine festival in Manteo Thursday, Aug. 18. This festival is held every Thursday through September.
A van will leave the center at 3:15 p.m. and return to the center about 9 p.m. Sign up at the center.
Luau planned Aug. 21
Posted by: | CommentsHawaii became a state Aug. 21, 1959, by proclamation of Dwight D. Eisenhower, President at the time.
In celebration of this historic event, the Baum Center will hold a luau Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1-3 p.m. Don your grass skirt and floral shirts and bring something Hawaiian to eat. The center will provide Hawaiian punch, music and fun, so sign-up at the center and bring a dish. Recipes are available upon request.
Craft fair set
Posted by: | CommentsOuter Banks Woman’s Club will hold their 38th annual Senior Citizen’s Craft Fair Aug. 3 and 4 at the Baum Center.
This is a service project for the club and all the money collected goes to senior crafters. There will be a $1 admittance fee per person. Proceeds will be donated to community projects.
Anyone interested in participating is invited to contact Julia Haywood at 441-9388 or 441-5034 for application, rules and regulations. Crafters must be 50 or older and year-round residents of Dare County.
Surfriders plan paddle race
Posted by: | CommentsSurfrider Foundation plans a one-mile paddle race Saturday, July 23. Participants can sign up at the race.
There will be prizes for first, second and third place in all divisions – shortboard, longboard, stand-up, kayak and youth. There will also be t-shirts for all and raffle tickets will be sold.
The cost is $20 for surfrider members, $25 for nonmenbers, $5 off if you join the surfriders the day of the event. Proceeds will benefit a scholarship for local high school students. Nags head to host fireworks
Posted by: | CommentsThe town of Nags Head will host, in conjunction with the Nags Head Fishing Pier, the 15th annual Independence Day fireworks spectacular Monday, July 4, at 9:25 p.m., on the ocean pier located at M.P. 11.5 on N.C. 12/S. Virginia Dare Trail in Nags Head. A rain date has been set for Friday, July 8. The fireworks display will last approximately 25 minutes. Zambelli Fireworks will present the program.
Parking at and near the fireworks display site will be directed by Nags Head Police Department. Everyone attending the show is encouraged to park east of U.S. 158/S. Croatan Highway. Those choosing to park west of U.S. 158 should use extreme caution while attempting to cross this heavily traveled roadway.
Everyone is reminded not to use or block private driveways. Vehicles blocking driveways or presenting a traffic hazard before, during or immediately following this event will be towed. The town requests that persons use the public beach accesses as pathways to the oceanfront. Please stay off the environmentally-sensitive dune, and do not use the private property of others, such as private gazebos or decks, to view the fireworks without the property owner’s permission.
No vehicles with the exception of authorized town and emergency vehicles, will be allowed on the oceanfront beaches.
The following public beach accesses are recommended for access to the beach for fireworks viewing:
South of Nags Head Fishing Pier – Curlew, Hollowell and Conch streets;
North of Nags Head Fishing Pier - Bladen, Bittern, Bonnett, Blackman and Barnes streets.
Jockey’s Ridge State Park is another ideal spot for viewing the fireworks. The park will be open late July 4 to accommodate visitors. Please call the park at 252-441-7132 for more information.
At the conclusion of the fireworks, spectator, pedestrian and vehicular traffic exiting the area will be directed and controlled by Nags Head police officers.
Army band comes to RIFP
Posted by: | Comments440th ARMY BAND will perform a Fourth of July Concert at Roanoke Island Festival Park in the outdoor pavilion. Fireworks will be provided by the town of Manteo at 9:30 p.m., following the concert. This patriotic concert will begin at 8 p.m. with gates opening at 6 p.m. Parking will be available at the park until the lot is full, then in downtown Manteo. Handicap parking will be available at the park. The celebration is free and open to the public.
Musical selections will include: “America the Beautiful,” “Star Spangled Banner,” “Hail to the Sppirit of Liberty,” “American Salute,” “Raiders March,” “Army Strong,” “God Bless the USA,” “Washington Post” and more. In addition, the rock band “The Minutemen” and the jazz band “The Jazz Patriots” will also perform selections in the styles of their respective groups.
The 440th has served as the states” National Guard Band under designations since the early 1900s. The band was activated in Workd War II as the 30th Infantry Division Band, along with the rest of the N.C. National Guard as the “Old Hickory Division.” They served with distinction, landing on the beach at Normandy and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge for which the band carries honors awarded by France and Belgium.
The band was redesignated the 440th Army Band in 1973. It perform for troops and their families and for the citizens of North Carolina at ceremonies, public concerts and parades. As the 440th Army Band, they have performed two concert tours in the Virgin Islands and toured Guatemala, Morocco. Costa Rica and Italy. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the band has performed more than 200 ceremonies for deploying and returning North Carolina National Guardsmen and their families.
The band is comprised of citizen soldiers who in civilian life, are college students, educators, business men and women and professional people. They have earned numerous awards including Outstanding N.C. National Guard Unit and have earned the Eisenhower trophy three times as an outstanding Army unit.
The band has 40 members and is commanded by CW2 Brent Harvey who in civilian life is a college professor at Winston-Salem University with a doctor’s degree in Low Brass.
Hands Across the Sand planned
Posted by: | CommentsHands Across the sand, an event supporting clean energy and opposing offshore oil drilling, will take place June 25 at Seaside Realty, Lillian St. in Kitty Hawk.
Participants are asked to show up at 11 p.m. with plans to join hands at noon for 15 minutes. On the same date and at the same time, people around the world will join hands in beaches and in cities for the second such event. This is a movement made up of people of all walks of life and crosses all borders and political affiliations. The movement is not about politics; it is about protecting coastal economies, ocean marine wildlife and fisheries from the threats of expanded offshore drilling and the accidents associated with this. They are imploring leaders and decision-makers to end the United States’ dependence on oil and coal and embrace a clean energy future.

Peach festival set this weekend
Posted by: | CommentsKnotts Island Peach Festival, sponsored by the Ruritan Club, the Knotts Island Market and Bonney Bright Sand Co., will take place this weekend, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Corolla plans July 4 celebration
Posted by: | CommentsCorolla is planning a July 4 celebration with a fireworks display at Currituck Heritage Park, live music featuring Pairadocs and Moceans.
A watermelon eating contest will begin at 5:45 p.m, and a cornhole tournament at 6:30 p.m. From 7-7:45 p.m., there will be a marionette performance put on by the N.C. Marionette Theatre. Hear Christian music Mondays

She will offer music for the whole family from soloists to bands. Love offering proceeds will go to ICO (Interfaith Community Outreach) and the Beach Food Pantry.
