Purple martin stamp on sale

Posted by: Linda Putnam | Comments Comments Off

The U.S. Postal Service has issued a new, stamped envelope featuring the image of a purple martin. The new No. 10-sized, no-lick envelope has “Forever” postage, meaning the value of the postage is always equal to the value of the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce rate. Purple martins have special meaning to Manns Harbor and the Outer Banks because the William B. Umstead Bridge between Manns Harbor and Roanoke Island’s north end is a summertime roost for the birds. In July, more than 100,000 martins will come to the bridge to roost overnight, protecting their young and preparing for their long migration south to Brazil in late summer.

The annual sign of spring is when martins return to the area in late February to settle into their housing and bring new hatchlings into the world. Purple martins rely soley on humans for their housing, in nesting boxes or gourds. To learn how you can attract the birds and manage a colony, attend a workshop on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Kill Devil Hills library. Members of the Coastal Carolina Purple Martin Society will explain the behavior of these birds and how to manage nesting colonies. www.purplemartinroost.com (Courtesy www.obxCommonGood.org)

Men’s Fellowship gathers

Posted by: Linda Putnam | Comments Comments Off

This month The Men’s Fellowship will celebrate Thanksgiving by traveling to Hatteras Island and gathering right in the center of the devastation brought on by Hurricane Irene. Dinner will be served at the Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo Community Center on Tuesday night November 29 at 6 p.m.. The center is located on the west side of Rt. 12 in Rodanthe at Myrna Peters Rd.

This is the fellowship’s first chance to visit, fellowship and minister with the great men of Hatteras Island since Irene. They have always been faithful traveling each month up to the northern Outer Banks and since the storm hit over two months ago, they have been up to their hips dealing with damaged property and damaged people. Organize your carpools, put it on your calendar and make it happen. If you haven’t been to Hatteras Island since the storm, you might want to travel down earlier before sunset so you can see some of the damage for yourself. The tri-villages of Rodanthe, Salvo and Waves, and Avon, and the people living there will be repairing and rebuilding for a long time to come.

An incredible, SRO, evening was experienced last month at Kitty Hawk Baptist Church. More than 120 men attended, more than 25 different churches were represented, the meal was superbly prepared and the Holy Spirit infused the entire meeting. Testimony, song, worship, the Word and prayer all added to the atmosphere of “pressing in close”.

The Men’s Fellowship is an interdenominational organization which meets monthly in many locations in Dare, Currituck and other northeast North Carolina counties. Not affiliated with any single church or denomination, it has members from Moyock to Hatteras Village, from Nags Head to Elizabeth City. Depending on location, the men represent 25 to 30 congregations of all denominations in our area. It is a loosely formed group with no specific agenda other than expressing our love for each other and the love of Christ for all persons.
