Travel to see the Tides
Posted by: | CommentsA group from The Dare County Center will take a trip to Norfolk, Va. to see the Norfolk Tides play Friday, May 27.
The cost is $15 and includes the ride to and from Norfolk, parking and entry to the game (bring money for food at the park). The group will leave at 4:30 p.m. and the game will start at at 7:15 p.m.
Pool tournament set
Posted by: | CommentsAn 18-and-up pool tournament has been set for Monday, May 23, and will continue Wednesday, May 25, if necessary, at The Dare County Center, check-in at 5:45 p.m., start time is 6 p.m.
The cost of $5 is due at the time of registration. The deadline for registration is May 18.
A limit of 20 players has been set. The tournament will be double elimination for fewer than 12 players and single elimination if there are more players.

Triathlon set, Corolla
Posted by: | CommentsThe Whalehead Club in Corolla is planning a pedal-foot-paddle triathlon Saturday, April 23, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It will begin and end in Currituck Heritage Park. It starts with a 7-mile scenic cycle through Corolla, followed by a 2-mile run on the beach at low tide, wrapping up with a 1-mile kayak paddle on the Currituck Sound.
For the more leisure-minded, enjoy the Land and Light climb up the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, then stroll through the park, ending at the front porch of the Whalehead Club.

Field dedication set
Posted by: | CommentsRalph Horne Field will be dedicated at Ernest “Pigum” Walker Park in Wanchese Saturday, March 26, at 10 a.m. This youth league field will be used as a part of the Cal Ripkin Youth Baseball League as well as other recreational leagues.
Horne was a resident of Roanoke Island and a dedicated youth sports coach with Dare County Parks and Recreation. The field will be dedicated in his memory recognizing his service coaching both Babe Ruth baseball and softball nearly every season for 20 years. He was also active in coaching and other sports offered through parks and recreation and was a Recreation Advisory Board member.
“Ralph was willing to coach whenever we asked him,” commented Tim White, Dare County public services director. “His five children were involved in our programs, and he coached them all. He always said yes when we needed him to coach a team.” (Courtesy Dare County Public Relations)
Health screens set
Posted by: | CommentsSenior Games registration ends March 11. The events begin April 4 and end April 16.
On April 5, 8:30 a.m. to noon, The Outer Banks Hospital will provide free health screens at the Baum Center in partnership with the Dare County Senior Games.
In addition to the screening for glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure levels, the health fair will also feature wellness information about programs and services available at the hospital. Participants can learn about new technology for breast biopsies, procedures for kidney stones, chemotherapy, cancer support and many other services available at the hospital.
Walk-ins are welcomed at the event, but advance registration is encouraged. Keep in mind that accurate blood tests require fasting from food and drink after midnight in preparation for the health screen.
