Health screens set
Posted by: | CommentsSenior Games registration ends March 11. The events begin April 4 and end April 16.
On April 5, 8:30 a.m. to noon, The Outer Banks Hospital will provide free health screens at the Baum Center in partnership with the Dare County Senior Games.
In addition to the screening for glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure levels, the health fair will also feature wellness information about programs and services available at the hospital. Participants can learn about new technology for breast biopsies, procedures for kidney stones, chemotherapy, cancer support and many other services available at the hospital.
Walk-ins are welcomed at the event, but advance registration is encouraged. Keep in mind that accurate blood tests require fasting from food and drink after midnight in preparation for the health screen.

Tennis anyone?

North vs. South pool event set
Posted by: | CommentsA 55 and up North vs. South Senior Pool tournament is planned for Friday, March 18, beginning at 6 p.m. The cost is $5.
Buxton pool players will be joining the ones at The Dare County Center for round two of the tournament. Preregistration is required by Tuesday, March 15.
Ping pong tournament set

The cost is $5. Emily Karr will drive participants to Manteo from the Baum center.
Light to Light Run set

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes announces the second annual FCA Light to Light Run to be held Saturday, Feb. 26, beginning at the Currituck Lighthouse and ending at the Bodie Island Lighthouse.
It will begin at 7 a.m.. Local businessman Chuck Parker is again leading the run and invites any interested runners to join him, individually or in teams. “Last year during the Light to Light Run, we had more than 30 runners run some portion of the course,” said Parker, who was able to finish the course in just under eight hours.
“The camaraderie was great! This year we would like to enroll relay teams to run from Light to Light. Teams of 2, 3 or more can sign up and Run the day for FCA. I’m also putting out a call for anyone who wants to cover the whole distance with me, Let’s go!” The registration is $25 and the form can be found at www.nencfca.org.
Donations are being accepted for Chuck and the other participants, on a per-mile bais or overall amount, to raise funds for the Northeast N.C. FCA. Area director Scott Williams is serving full-time now in the northeast North Carolina FCA Area, which includes the six counties of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Pasquotank and Perquimans.
“Last year’s run was such a success in raising awareness about FCA, as well as funding. Chuck did a great job and is looking forward to this year’s run,” Williams said.

Eight-ball tournament March 4
Posted by: | CommentsSeventh annual Ellsworth B. Midgett Senior Eight-Ball Tournament is planned for Friday, March 4, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Baum Center. Men and women 55 or older are encouraged to participate. Bring a bagged lunch, and the center will supply drinks and chips.
This single elimination tournament will follow Senior Games rules, including the break-down of age groups. Anyone who would like to participate in this tournament should fill out a registration form which is available at the center. Registration forms and the $5 registration fee should be paid to a staff member on or before 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25.
Pool tournaments on tap

An 18-and-up tournament is planned for Monday, Feb. 21, beginning at 6 p.m., cost $5.
Preregister by calling the center at 475-9270.
A 55-and-up North vs. South Senior Tournament will be held Friday, March 18, 6 p.m., cost $5.
Buxton players will be joining the group for round two of the tournament. Register at the above-mentioned number by Tuesday, March 15.
Ping Pong tournaments set
Posted by: | CommentsPing Pong tournaments will be held at The Dare County Center Tuesday, Feb. 22, beginning at 6 p.m., and on Monday, March 21, there will be double elimination tournament at 6 p.m. The cost for each is $5.
Preregistration is required for the March event by March 15. This tournament may require a second night. If so, it will be finished Wednesday, March 23, at 6 p.m.

8-ball tournament set

Both men and women 55 or older (on or before Dec. 31, 2011) are encouraged to take part. Participants are asked to bring a bagged lunch, and the center will supply the drinks and chips.
This single elimination tournament will follow Senior Games rules, including the breakdown of age groups. Anyone wishing to participate should fill out a registration form available at the Baum Center and pay the registration fee of $5 on or before 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26.
Womens Pool League begins
Posted by: | CommentsThe Women’s Pool League will begin at the Baum Center Tuesday, Jan. 11, continuing through March 29, and will meet every Monday from 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Participation is limited due to the number of pool tables available. Sign up at the front desk or call 475-5637. The deadline for registration is Jan. 8 at 5 p.m. For more information contact Susan Faudie at 255-5875.
