Bennett Wales

Bennett Wales was born November 28, 1952 in New London, Conn. and died September 20, 2011 in Hatteras after a mercifully short battle with pancreatic cancer. He grew up on the Princess Anne Country Club golf course, behind the Old Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach but settled in Frisco where he was well liked and fit right in with the Outer Banks people.

He was a muscular, weathered 6’5″ carpenter that built and repaired many homes during his nearly 40 year career. He built them of a very high quality, with the integrity to withstand many Nor’easters and more than a few hurricanes. He built them on slab, block and more often pilings, some four stories tall. And he was a craftsman as well as a Framer that weatherized the exteriors & finished the interiors. He inherited the love of reading, fishing and the Outer Banks from his grandfather, Louis Charles Ganzel, Jr, who taught him to fish as a young boy, and read to him nightly until he became an avid reader for himself at a very young age. Sadly, Louis passed suddenly when Mark was 11. Mark became a voracious reader and enjoyed everything from Mark Twain and Teddy Roosevelt to Dostoyevsky and the Dalai Lama. He also enjoyed Music and developed over many years an almost encyclopedic knowledge of rock and roll & the blues. Some of his favorite artists were Elvin Bishop, Robert Plant, Jimi Hendrix & B. B. King to name a few.

He was an expert salt water sport fisherman, on and off shore with many citations for Red Drum or Channel Bass, Speckled Trout, Dolphin, Blue Marlin, White Marlin and Sailfish, most of them released. His favorite fishing holes were the Point and the Gulf Stream on the Continent’s edge at Hatteras. He was honored to have been a mate on the Bullfrog for Capt Bob Eakes and on the Albatross fleet for Captains Ernie and Bill Foster. One mid-winter he helped bring Capt. Eakes 35’ boat to Hatteras from it’s birthplace in Maine. The Fosters started the blue water charter boat fishing industry on the Outer Banks. Mark was a crackerjack first mate for them for several years.

Everyone that knew Mark knew he had a big heart. He was deeply loved and survived by his wife Lori Wales and their son Beckett, who will cherish his memory; his mother Nancy G. Wales, who adored him, and father Lawrence B. Wales, Jr, his aunt “Teedie” Ganzel, who loved him dearly and his younger brothers and their families, The Hon. Peter G. Wales, Capt. Larry B. Wales, III and David H. Wales, that all naturally looked up to him.

Mark’s son is as tough as he was. He has been on full scholarship for the Syracuse University football team for two years and is a tight end. Mark’s admiration for Beckett knew no bounds. A description of the character of the Outer Banks people from the book Hatteras Blues, by Tom Carlson fits Mark, pretty well too.

“They are hard working and loyal and patriotic and stunningly selfless when such is called for. But, at the same time, these same people are fiercely headstrong, independent, mistrustful of authority, wildly inmpatient with bureaucracy, and often sleeve- rolling angry with unethical bullshit. What’s right is right. Pay a man back what you owe him, in money or labor. Run another man’s nets if he’s sick and his family needs the money.

A short funeral service will be held at Galilee Episcopal Church sometime during the Syracuse University Football Team bye-week and a gathering of his friends will be on the south beach in Frisco later.
