Joseph Mondello

Southern Shores – Joe Mondello died peacefully June 3 at his home in Southern Shores at the age of 89.

For Joe, spending time enjoying family and friends was a very important part of his life. He also loved watching sports and was an avid golfer in earlier years. In recent years he wasn’t able to get out on course at Duck Woods Country Club but still enjoyed talking about it and staying in touch with his friends there.

Joe was born to Benedetto and Rosalie (Croce) Mondello in Oswego, N.Y. on Sept. 23, 1920. Although a college student, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Marines the day after Pearl Harbor and bravely fought for his country at Guadalcanal.

After Joe’s enlistment was up, he returned to Oswego State University and graduated with a degree in education. After graduation, he was immediately employed by the Hauppage school system on Long Island, N.Y. where he excelled. Early in his career, he enrolled in St. John’s College and earned a masters degree in education administration. After a long and stellar career, he retired as principal of Pines Elementary School in 1979. Because Joe’s love knew no bounds, thousands of children grew up lovingly referring to him as ”my pal” and ”Mr.  M.” Integrity and honesty were hallmarks of his character. His gregariousness, charm, wonderful sense of humor and patients brought a smile to everyone he encountered.

After vacationing in Southern Shores in the late 1960s, Joe and his wife, Kay, moved to Duck in the early 80’s, building one of the first  houses on Carroll Dive in Caffey’s Inleet. Back then, from their third back lot from the ocean, they could see the military pier with unobstructed views.

Joe helped found the Duck VFD, participating in endless fundraisers and the very popular barbecues to raise the capital for the materials that became the present-day fire house. The volunteers in the community, the builders and the construction trades donated their time and labor to construct the fire department with the funds raised.

Joe was fortunate enough to spend his last years at his house due to the excellent care he received from Margaret Thomas, Annie Harris and Fran Down.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife Kay, the love of his life, in 1994. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen, of Santa Fe, N.M. He will be greatly missed by his beloved grandchildren, Joseph Shelhorse and his wife, Lisa; Jamie Shelhorse and his wife, Joy; Jill Lennon and her husband Brian; his four great-grandchildren, Katie, Caroline, Brandon and Clifford Joseph and his sisters, Bessie Kudwa and Rose Mondello.
